A - Z INDEX

Social Housing is housing that is affordable for young families starting out in life and for ordinary working people on a normal working wage. Social housing is also housing for the retired and elderly.

The Conservative Party virtually abandoned the idea of social housing when they allowed councils in England to sell off their affordable rent housing stocks. The Prime Minister at the time was Margaret Thatcher. She obviously did not give a fig about the working man, but worse still, forgot that Conservative party fortunes were built on the sweat of the working man's brow.

Hoping to stage a recovery, the National Planning Policy Framework document was introduced to direct councils to identify and earmark land for affordable housing.

As far as we know, no council in England has done so in over 5 years, because of the structure of Parish and District councils that ultimately allows them to control development for family and friends - and they don't want economic housing because their friends the landowners would not get so much money for their land and architects and planning lawyers would not get such a fat slice of the corruption cake.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Truly affordable housing is also climate friendly. During WWII when we needed low cost housing to accommodate the work force we built smaller units like those at Pevensey Bay in Sussex.
