It
has been said the Audit Commission and Local
Government Ombudsman exist to fend off complaints about Council's and
make them look good! It is disturbing to us that of the 440+
Councils listed below - and in consideration of the frequency of known
cases of unlawful activity - deception and cover up concerning just Wealden
District Council, then statistically around 2,000 crimes a month are
committed, which crimes largely go undetected. That is 24,000
serious crimes against the person a year the Police turn a blind eye to,
year in year out. Where the Police are funded by local Councils and
therefore unlikely to want to bite the hand that feeds them. It's
food for thought!
The
reason these crimes take place in the first place, is that they are common
law offences for which it is notoriously difficult, if not impossible, to galvanize
any Police force with priority limitations into action. That is why
Lord Nolan, head of the Standards in Public Life Committee, recommended
new statute, specifically aimed at reducing the free hand (effectively
immunity) council officers enjoy at present. Quite simply, Council
officers are above the law as we write. We would like to see the
law mature to encompass the impropriety occasioned by planning officers in
particular as criminal statute - as a shield to protect the public from
heavy handed officials.
