STEVE DOUBLE - "I was born in St Austell and have lived in Mid-Cornwall all my life. I understand the challenges that local people face because I face them too.

I live with my wife of 27 years and our three sons. I have experience of serving our community as a volunteer at my local church; I know what it’s like to work in business, having run one myself; and I have the record of delivering for our area as a local councillor.

If re-elected as your MP, I pledge to:

1) Back local businesses and deliver investment for our area – to create jobs for young people and close the gap between wages in Cornwall and the national average

2) Support families, the foundation of the community – including reforming welfare and making work pay for hardworking families

3) Protect our coast and countryside – they’re one of Cornwall’s greatest assets and I’m committed to preserving them for our children and fighting unwanted wind turbines and solar farms

I will work hard to deliver these pledges and will always be a proud champion for St Austell and Newquay."

HOW STEVE VOTED ON FOREIGN POLICY & DEFENCE:

Consistently voted for use of UK military forces in combat operations overseas
2 votes for, 0 votes against, in 2015

Has never voted on investigations into the Iraq war, just as well, what a can of worms that one is with Tony Blair already in the dog house over his handling of that one.

Consistently voted for replacing Trident with a new nuclear weapons system
4 votes for, 0 votes against, in 2016

Almost always voted against more EU integration - the problem being that as a small island the United Kingdom is unlikely to be able to make a big contribution on a whole range of social issues - where as a member of a larger collaborative force the collective funding ability is that much greater - one reason the the US became the United States of America.
4 votes for, 26 votes against, 3 absences, between 2016–2017

Consistently voted for a referendum on the UK's membership of the EU
4 votes for, 0 votes against, between 2015–2016

Almost always voted against a right to remain for EU nationals already in living in the UK
0 votes for, 13 votes against, 3 absences, between 2016–2017

0 votes for, 13 votes against, 2 absences, between 2016–2017

Consistently voted for military action against ISIL (Daesh)

WHAT DOES STEVE THINK OF THE MELTING ICE CAPS -  With Blue Growth and the Climate Change Act 2008 firmly on the political map, we wonder how the MP for St Austell and Newquay might face the challenges ahead.

Julienne Stroeve, a climate scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colorado, told Sputnik News about the changes taking place in the Arctic Ocean and what exactly this bodes for us in the foreseeable future.

“The changes are the largest in the summertime, but they are actually happening during all months of the year. I think the key things we really need to understand is, first, the natural climate variability and, second, changes caused by increased human activity. At thea current rate of carbon emissions of about 35 to 40 gigatons a year, we are estimating that the Arctic could become ice-free within the next 20 years,” Dr. Stroeve said.

“What we need to do [to avoid this] is to pressure the governments to move off the path of fossil-based economy to the use of more reusable energy. It is essential to mitigate [the impact of global warming],” she emphasized.

ABOUT STEVE

We are amazed at the energy of this MP from Cornwall, asking a wide range of questions, but so far nothing on climate change and transport infrastructure for low carbon vehicles.

Mr Double made up for his lack of drive on clean transport by doubling his efforts on marine litter. You cannot of course deal with every issue that comes along, but one should lead with the most important and work your way down a list. We are please that the MP is back with his wife and hope that the experience will serve him well in that mistakes happen, but the important thing is to learn from them and use that experience to steer others.

Steve secured Government backing for the new A30 link road to St Austell, something which people have wanted and talked about for years, but which has only got moving since he was elected as the MP for the area. Nice one, but don't forget to integrate any new roads with an action plan for an EV charging infrastructure.

Conservatives Stephen Double and Theresa May

In Parliament, Double Steve chairs the All Party Parliamentary Group for Protect Our Waves, working with Cornish charity Surfers Against Sewage, leading the fight against marine litter and protecting our beaches and seas which are so important to Mid-Cornwall. He is also co-chair of the Regional Airports APPG which works to lobby government on behalf of small regional airports. In this role, he has been able to effectively support Cornwall Newquay Airport which was recently named the best regional airport in the country by one national newspaper. He sits on the European Scrutiny Committee, which is expected to play an important role in our Brexit negotiations and the Petitions Committee., He has led several debates on subjects ranging from school term time holiday rules to the cost of car insurance for young people.

Double is also vice-chair of the Parliamentary Beer Group which works to support pubs and breweries. In this role, he has been able to actively support the work of St Austell Brewery – an important Mid-Cornwall business and employer. We are not sure about this one where alcoholism is a major issue, Any activity that promoted indulgence that could lead to addiction is to be treated with great care.

Steve is also a member of the Ceramics All Party Parliamentary Group which represents the ceramics industry which includes China Clay. In this role he has been able to influence government policy on issues effecting this important local industry to reduce the tax burden and promote china clay exports post Brexit. Funny how those exporting want the same benefits as when a member of Europe as when not.

Double also sits on the Parliamentary Space Committee where he has promoted Newquay as a frontrunner for the location of the UK’s first spaceport. Steve is well known in Parliament for his active support for Newquay Airport and has met with Government Ministers dozens of times in order to secure their support.
